Matildas superstar makes surprise appearance in WPL

Matildas superstar Lisa De Vanna has made a surprise appearance on the weekend in the Victorian Women's Premier League with Bundoora United.

De Vanna, a star of the Australia's run to the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada and considered one of the world's greatest forwards, shocked onlookers by coming off the bench as a second half sub in United's 2-0 win over Casey Comets.

The livewire striker is using the stint as a first stage of preparations for the new Westfield W-League season as well as Matildas' Olympics qualifiers following a hectic six months with the national team.

De Vanna, 30, the co-captain of the Matildas at June's World Cup, has inked a deal with Melbourne City FC for next season.

For the newest team in the Westfield W-League De Vanna's signature sends a message that City's women want to be more than competitive in their inaugural season.
