Poll: Is Sam Kerr world's most in-form female footballer?

A first international hat-trick in the Westfield Matildas' 4-2 win over Japan at the Tournament of Nations on Monday has many asking the question.

Is Sam Kerr the best female footballer on the planet right now?

Carli Lloyd is widely regarded as the world's best female footballer.

The American has won the official "Best FIFA Women's Player" award in the last two years.

Five-time winner of that gong, Brazilian legend Marta is also in the conversation.

But 23-year old Kerr presents a compelling case, with her feats for both club and country.

Kerr's combination of searing pace and lethal finishing sets her apart as one of the current game's best players.

Both qualities were on full display in Australia's victory over Japan.

For Sky Blue FC in the National Women's Soccer League, Kerr has already banged in 11 goals and provided three assists in 15 games.

Early last month she scored three goals in the final 12 minutes as Sky Blue FC came back from 2-0 down to beat FC Kansas City 3-2.

Kerr's club coach Christy Holly is in awe of her achievements this season.

“Sam is playing at a different level right now,” she said.

“The most exciting thing about Sam is we truly believe there is still more to come from her.

“She is very young, and she is still very early in her development.

“These are the moments where she is proving to be one of the best players in the world.

“As her coach and as a fan, we could not be any prouder of her,” said Holly.
