The Qantas Young Socceroos have won the AFF U-19 Championship, after beating Korea Republic 3-1 on penalties final at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand overnight.

For the second time in the tournament, the two teams finished scoreless after 90 minutes and it was decided to do away with extra time and go straight to the penalty shootout after the match was played in a heavy downpour for much of the second half.

In the shootout, Australia managed to keep their nerve, much better than the Korean-s, who missed with their first three attempts, while Sebastian Ryall, Jason Naidovski and captain James Holland all converted from the spot.

It was again a game of few chances, but both sides did have opportunities to win it in normal time, especially in the first half before the heavens opened.

Central Coast Mariners keeper Andrew Redmayne, who has performed well throughout the tournament, was again at his best to deny Lee Jong-won early in the match.

For Australia, Tahj Minniecon was proving handful for the Korean defence and he was denied following a scramble in the box, his shot saved by the Korean keeper.

Neither side really adapted to the heavy conditions in the second half, although Minniecon had several half chances but was get a good last touch to convert.
