Westfield Matildas topple Brazil in Newcastle

Two goals from superstar striker Sam Kerr has seen the Westfield Matildas complete a cleansweep of their two-game series against Brazil with a 3-2 win in Newcastle on Tuesday night.

In front of a record crowd of 16,829, the Westfield Matildas came from a goal down to lead 3-1 late on, before the visitors set up a grandstand finish with a late penalty by Marta.

Kerr was the star of the show, scoring two – and producing a back-flip celebration – and having a big hand in the other goal to Caitlin Foord.

It was the first time ever the Westfield Matildas have won five successive games and the side is now eight games unbeaten.

STORY OF THE GAME

*Just like they did in the recent Tournament of Nations, Brazil went on the front foot early, taking a lead inside the first minute.

*The early goal didn’t faze the Westfield Matildas and the immediately imposed themselves on the contest, with Sam Kerr, Hayley Raso and Emily van Egmond looking dangerous.

*It was another physical encounter with the tackles flying in from both sides but the Matildas eventually drew level just before the break through Sam Kerr.

*Kerr showed her class again early in the second half, helping substitute Caitlin Foord give Australia the lead.

*Brazil were tiring under relentless Matildas pressure and it was no surprise when Kerr scored her second of the match just after the hour mark.

*A late penalty narrowed the deficit to give Brazil hope but Australia held firm to make it three wins in a row against Brazil for the first time ever.

GOALS

1-0 Brazil, Fabiana 1’

Marta got free down the left and she played a beautiful ball across the box for Fabiana to tap in from close range at the far post.

1-1 Australia, Kerr 38’

Emily van Egmond swung in a free-kick deep from the right, with Kerr meeting it with a powerful header from just inside the box which proved too good for the keeper to save.

2-1 Australia, Foord 47’

A delicious through-ball from Kerr looked to have set up Katrina Gorry, only for the midfielder to scuff her shot. But the loose ball fell to Foord who swept it home from close range.

3-1 Australia, Kerr 66’

Chloe Logarzo played a neat one-two on the left before sending in an inch-perfect cross to Kerr who had the simple task to side-foot it in. And she pulled out the backflip to celebrate!

3-2 Brazil, Marta 86’

After Ellie Carpenter was adjudged to have brought down Marta in the box, the Brazil star stepped up to bury her spot-kick.
