Argentina-s English Premier League duo of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano figured prominently in midweek action for their respective club sides Manchester United and Liverpool.

Tevez laid on the goal for Paul Scholes in his starting debut for Manchester in the club-s 1-1 draw away at Portsmouth.

The former West Ham striker, who was the catalyst for their survival in the Premier League last season with a winner at Old Trafford on the last day of the season, neatly turned and played a ball into the path of Scholes, who lashed home in spectacular fashion.

But playing as a lone striker, Tevez influence was limited, although he did have a chance with 15 to go when he was inches to late to stab home after a rebound came his way from a Ronaldo shot.

United-s other Argentine international Gabriel Heinze was again not on the bench, as he looks to try and seal a move away from the club to arch rivals Liverpool.

Meanehile, Mascherano was in the starting line-up for Liverpool-s European Champions League 3rd Round Qualifying 1st Leg tie against French side Toulouse, which the former Champions won 1-0.

The elegant central midfielder has been an ever-present in the Liverpool since moving to the club during the middle of last season from West Ham.

Most of Argentina-s internationals that played in the Copa America, begin their club seasons over the coming weekends, with Italy and Spain not due to kick-off till the last weekend of August.

Argentina play Australia on Tuesday September 11 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, with tickets available from www.ticketmaster.com.au
