Aussies Abroad: van Egmond helps Orlando to win over Kerr’s Chicago

Westfield Matildas duo Emily van Egmond and Alanna Kennedy have earned bragging rights over Australian teammate Sam Kerr in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) on Thursday.

It was van Egmond and Kennedy’s Orlando Pride that came away with a shock 2-0 win at Kerr’s Chicago Red Stars in a clash that saw a 20-minute delay mid-match due to lightning.

All three of the Westfield Matildas played the full 90 minutes, with van Egmond playing a decisive role in Pride’s match-sealer nine minutes from time.

Leading 1-0 thanks to Chioma Ubogagu’s first-half strike, Orlando iced the result late on as van Egmond’s deft pass found substitute Rachel Hill who made no mistake with the finish.

The result has seen Orlando jump into the top four, now just one point behind second-placed Chicago.

Kerr went close on a couple of occasion to getting on the scoresheet, firing off four shots at goal but couldn’t find her way past Pride keeper Ashlyn Harris.

Orlando has the bye in the NWSL this weekend, with Kerr’s Chicago taking on North Carolina Courage in a top-of-the-table clash.
