Aussies star in the Big Apple

The Big Apple had an Australian feel to it on Saturday night as the New York Red Bulls took out a 2-1 victory against D.C. United.

Tim Cahill was involved in both goals as he set up the first and scored the second as, alongside fellow Aussie David Carney, helped put the Red Bulls in a tie on top of the Eastern Conference.

While Cahill scored his eighth goal for the Red Bulls there was an even more memorable moment for the Socceroos hero as his son was given the privilege of singing the national anthem prior to kickoff.

With father-s day looming Kyah Cahill belted out Star Spangled Banner in front of a packed Red Bull arena and his proud dad, a performance that seemed to take the 33-year-old to another level again.

Cahill and Carney then took to the field and there were only eight minutes on the clock when Cahill fed Englishman Lloyd Sam who gave the Red Bulls the early lead.

As halftime approached D.C. United got the equaliser when Dwayne De Rosario found a wide open Nick DeLeon in the box. DeLeon then beat his defender as he cut the ball back to his left and put it past the New York keeper.

Cahill-s response was swift as he put in a trademark leap to head home to restore his side-s one goal lead.

In a blow for the Socceroos Cahill was substituted in the 58th minute with an ankle injury as French stalwart Thierry Henry replaced the Aussie hero. The injury would see Cahill pull out of the Socceroos clash with Brazil next week.

The Red Bulls then faced more adversity as they were reduced to ten men with just under 20 minutes left in the game when Ibrahim Sekagya brought down De Rosario in the box and was giving his marching orders.

He however failed to convert the resulting penalty as Robles guessed correctly and ensured his side got all three points.
