Australian Referees Selected for FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup

Australian referees have again been recognised on the international stage with Referee Kate Jacewicz and Assistant Referee Renae Coghill being selected for the upcoming FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup being played in France.

For two of the Westfield W-League’s most experienced match officials, this appointment follows their success at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in 2016 where they controlled the Final between Korea DPR and Japan.

Speaking before departing for France, Jacewicz said she was pleased with her preparation ahead of the tournament.

“I’m going into the tournament with a positive and open mindset to continue to gain valuable experience and take away as many leanings as I can. The spotlight on women’s football has certainly increased, as has the professionalism in the game and the way the game is played.

“The expectations of referees are always increasing and FIFA has identified our key areas for improvement which we focus on through our training plans. Being my second FIFA tournament, it certainly gives me confidence knowing what to expect and how to prepare to give my best performances out on the field.”

Coghill was also looking forward to the experience and the opportunities now available in the women’s game.

“The FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup was such an amazing experience for us but the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup brings a new experience and new opportunities. My goal is to perform well and show my progress since 2016, but most importantly to enjoy the experience and make the most of the chances I get.

“We see through these tournament that the growth in women’s football has been huge. The women’s game is continuing to grow and it’s a very exciting time to be a part of both the game and women’s sport in general.

The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup kicks off on 5 August 2018 in France.
