'Bring on France 2019!' Social reaction to Westfield Matildas' heart-breaking loss

The Westfield Matildas may have fallen at the final hurdle in the AFC Women's Asian Cup Final but they haven't lost any admirers following a narrow loss to Japan.

Australia played some eye-catching football at times and created a host of clear-cut chances in the decider but couldn't find the breakthrough on a frustrating night in Amman.

Elise Kellond-Knight had a penalty saved in the opening 15 minutes while Emily van Egmond struck the crossbar with a long-range effort early in the second period.

And their failure to capitalise proved costly with substitute Kumi Yokoyama netting a superb strike with just over five minutes left to hand Japan a 1-0 victory.

It sealed Japan's second-straight Asian Cup title with the Nadeshiko also defeating the Matildas 1-0 in the 2014 Final in Vietnam.

But despite the defeat, football fans still had plenty of praise for Alen Stajcic's side.

Here's some of the reaction from social media.
