Brosque has edge

Sydney FC's Alex Brosque is hopeful the similarities between the styles of club coach Vitezslav Lavicka and Qantas Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek can give him an edge as he looks to secure his first national cap in over three years.

Brosque has been one of the standout attacking players in the Hyundai A-League this season and has been rewarded by first being called-up for the squad ahead of the Asian Cup qualifier against Oman in November then again for the upcoming qualifier against Kuwait.

Given the striking options at Verbeek's disposal, it won't be surprising to see Brosque in the starting XI for the match in Kuwait City on Thursday morning, ending his long absence from the national side.

"I never gave up hope, but as the years went on it was getting further and further from my mind," Brosque told reporters in Dubai.

"I was happy through the last camp to be involved and got a chance at training with the boys and now again with this squad here. It-s been a good tough week but it's always good to be involved in the national team."

Sydney has moved to the top of the table under the guidance of Czech Lavicka, who has moulded the Sky Blues into the best defensive side in the league. Brosque sees similarities in the European coaching styles of Lavicka and Verbeek and hopes that can give him an edge in the battle for starting places

"I think their philosophies are pretty similar. In formation and how they like to keep solid defensively, attack with real venom, they are very similar in their styles which is good because having been involved with Vitezslav all year, it-s made a little bit easier coming into the camp," he said.
