De Vanna nominated for Goal of the Tournament

Westfield Matildas co-captain Lisa De Vanna has been nominated as a contender for goal of the tournament at the Women’s World Cup in Canada.

The striker was one of 12 players selected by a FIFA panel for her history making effort against the USA in the Matildas’ tournament opener in Winnipeg.

De Vanna was teed up in the box by Michelle Heyman and guided the ball past goalkeeper of the tournament Hope Solo with fine left-footed finish.

The strike in her 100th international saw De Vanna join Tim Cahill as the only Aussies to score in three consecutive World Cups and was the only goal USA conceded prior to defeating Japan in the final.

While Carli Lloyd’s effort from half-way in the 5-2 triumph will surely be hard to beat fans can get behind De Vanna by voting on the FIFA website.

The nomination caps a big weekend for the 30-year-old who was also unveiled as Melbourne City FC’s first signing for their inaugural season in the Westfield W-League.

Fans have until 10.00pm (AEST) Monday 13 July to cast their vote in the Goal of the Tournament competition. Click here to vote now.
