Farewell match preview: Matildas v Vietnam

The Westfield Matildas will hope to depart for next month’s FIFA Women’s World Cup on a high in their official farewell match against Vietnam at Jubilee Oval in Sydney on Thursday night (6.30pm AEST).

Alen Stajcic’s side leaves for Canada on Saturday and will relish one final hit-out to iron out any chinks against the world’s 34th ranked nation.

This clash marks the start of a final preparation stretch for the Aussie girls, which includes a two-week training block in Vancouver ahead of their World Cup campaign.

It’s starting to get real for our Westfield Matildas. They are excited and so are the fans.

The preparation for the squad has so far been grueling but flawless since they first assembled in camp in January.

Led by newly-appointed co-captains Lisa De Vanna and Clare Polkinghorne, there is a great belief this side can go to Canada and cause a few shocks.

The Westfield Matildas and Vietnam have met four times in the past with the Aussies winning all four, including a 4-0 drubbing behind closed doors at Parklea on Tuesday night.

Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord, Kyah Simon – in her 50th senior international match - and Michelle Heyman scored the goals in a dominant showing.
