Flashy Kerr cannot save West New York

Matildas winger Sam Kerr has not been able to help the West New York Flash in the inaugural US National Women-s Soccer League final as her side went down 2-0 to the Portland Thorns.

There was nothing separating the clubs in the lead up to the match with the Flash (1st) and the Thorns (3rd) finishing equal on points at the end of the regular season while the two previous matches this season between these teams both ended in draws.

Kerr had a brilliant opportunity to give her side the lead early but her header was tipped over the crossbar.

Tobin Heath opened the scoring in the 41st minute from a free kick as she gave her side a 1-0 halftime lead.

The Thorns were then forced to play for over half an hour with only ten players but not only did not concede but increased their lead.

Substitute Alex Morgan scored the sealer on 72 minutes when she headed home as her side went up 2-0.

At only 19 years of age Kerr has already crept towards 20 appearances for her national side, played for the Perth Glory and Sydney FC in the W-League and now played in a US National Women-s Soccer League final in what has been a great start to her promising career.
