How to watch Westfield Matildas in the Westfield W-League Round 12

With only three rounds remaining in the Westfield W-League, there are too many teams vying for not enough finals spots near the top of the table.

Seven points separate the seven top four contenders, and with Newcastle Jets an outside chance on 10 points, it seems most teams are in with a chance of playing finals football.

Canberra United v Melbourne Victory
Thursday, 7:30pm AEDT

Melbourne Victory returns from a week’s rest with a totally different picture to the one they faced a week ago.

With wins to Sydney FC and Brisbane Roar, along with shock losses to Perth Glory and Adelaide United, Victory holds onto their lead at the summit by two points.

Laura Alleway and Emily Gielnik will return to action, facing off against an Ellie Carpenter who grabbed the winner against Adelaide United in Round 11.

The 18-year-old has three goals this campaign, one more than she grabbed last season, and is developing into one of Heather Garriock’s most dangerous weapons.

Get Onside

Her versatility in defence and midfield, along with her growing football intelligence, is an asset to Canberra United and the Westfield Matildas.

With three games remaining for Melbourne Victory, the Premiership is theirs to lose.

Adelaide United v Western Sydney Wanderers
Saturday, 4:30pm AEDT

For the first time in the 2018/19 Season, Adelaide United slipped out of the top four. While it seemed to have come at a bad time, the Reds can rectify that slide when they host Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.

Westfield Matildas forward Michelle Heyman hasn’t scored since her Round 8 strike against Melbourne Victory, but you wouldn’t bet against her finding the back of the net, such is her desire and quality.

For the Wanderers, their top-four hopes were dashed weeks ago, but they can still play a key role in influencing who will be playing finals football in mid-February.

Brisbane Roar v Sydney FC
Saturday, 5pm AEDT

When it comes to season-defining clashes, it doesn't get anymore exciting than this affair: Brisbane Roar are two points ahead of Sydney FC with both sides looking to knock Melbourne Victory off their perch.

The Roar must chase their second consecutive Premiership without Katrina Gorry, who last week was ruled out for the rest of the season with syndesmosis.

Not that they don't possess some Westfield Matildas star power in the form of Clare Polkinghorne and Mackenzie Arnold.

The latter was particularly impressive in Brisbane’s 1-0 win over Melbourne City, sustaining wave after wave of attacks and keeping her side in the game.

Sydney, on the other hand, are one of the form teams of the Westfield W-League, grabbing nine points from their last 12, and amassing 12 goals along the way.

Caitlin Foord is in some particularly good form, grabbing a brace against Western Sydney in Round 11, while Princess Ibini, Alanna Kennedy and Chloe Logarzo are all clocking valuable minutes on the eve of the Finals.

Make sure you have the MyFootball App for this fixture — it’s going to be epic.

Melbourne City v Newcastle Jets
Sunday, 7:30pm

Melbourne City will have to quickly lick their wounds and regroup as they host a Newcastle Jets outfit that, despite being without captain Emily van Egmond, will be brimming with confidence.

The Jets pulled off an unlikely, come-from-behind win to beat Perth Glory 3-1, doing so without their Westfield Matildas midfielder.

Larissa Crummer and Gema Simon have steadied the ship, bringing national team experience to the fore.

Tameka Butt

Melbourne City have some Westfield Matildas on their own, with the likes of Tameka Butt, Elise Kellond-Knight and Lydia Williams fired up for a tight finish.

With this clash rounding out an exciting Round 12, the equation will be all the more clearer by the time Sunday night rolls around.
