Injury rules out Schwarzer and Cahill

Holger Osieck confirmed that Mark Schwarzer and Tim Cahill would not join the squad for the international friendly match against Malaysia or the 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifier against Oman.

Qantas Socceroos Head Coach Holger Osieck today confirmed that Mark Schwarzer and Tim Cahill would not travel to Sydney to join the squad for the upcoming international friendly match against Malaysia (Friday 7 October 2011, Kick-off 8pm) or the 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifier against Oman (Tuesday 11 October 2011, Kick-off 7:30pm).

Two weeks ago Schwarzer injured his back whilst playing for his club, Fulham FC, and reinjured it again during the warm-up for his match against Queens Park Rangers yesterday.

Cahill sustained a leg injury playing for his club, Everton FC, against Manchester City on the 24th September and, although he was cleared to play on the weekend, exacerbated the injury during the match against Liverpool on Saturday.

After consultation with the players, their respective clubs and the Qantas Socceroos medical staff, Osieck has decided that both players would not be required in camp.

Osieck has drafted in Danish-based goalkeeper Nathan Coe to replace Schwarzer in the Qantas Socceroos squad.

The Qantas Socceroos are beginning to assemble in Sydney and will have their first light training session tomorrow afternoon at Leichhardt Oval (3:45pm).
