The Qantas Joeys have defeated Guam 10-0 in their AFC U-16 Championship qualifiers match at the Debhatsadin Stadium in Bangkok.

After Luke Stergiou opened the scoring for the Qantas Joeys early in the first half, it took until the second half for the flood gates to open through substitutes Taylor Tombides and Josh MacDonald scoring five and three goals respectively with midfielder Kevin Ly also adding his name to the scoresheet just after the hour mark.

Qantas Joeys Head Coach Jan Versleijen was pleased that his team found the back of the net in such emphatic fashion, but knows that the success of the whole campaign will come down to their final match against Indonesia.

“We started the match by playing some players who had not played much during the tournament and resting others players who had played the majority of the first three matches, including those who were sitting on yellow cards.

“In the first half we were not able to finish our opportunities, but after a couple of changes at the start of the second half we played much better, found the target and could have actually scored more goals,” he said.

“We have improved as a team throughout the tournament and with this improvement I am confident that we should be able to get the result against Indonesia on Thursday to achieve our goal of qualifying for next year-s championship,” concluded Versleijen.

In the other Group G matches Thailand remained at the top of the table with a 4-1 victory over Indonesia and Myanmar defeated Hong Kong 4-2.

The Qantas Joeys need to win their final group match against Indonesia at the Rajamangala Stadium on Thursday (22 September kick-off 6:00pm local (9.00pm AEST) to guarantee a place at the AFC U-16 Championship next year.

During the AFC U-16 Championship qualifiers, each group will play one round league and the top two teams from each group will progress to the AFC U-16 Championship 2012.

Additionally, the third best teams from each West and East zones will complete the 16-team line up of the 2012 finals.

The AFC U-16 Championship will serve as the qualifying event for the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup which will be held in the United Arab Emirates in October/November.
