Kerr in contention for AFC's top individual honour

Sam Kerr is a strong favourite to be named Australia's fourth AFC's Women's Footballer of the Year when the confederation's awards ceremony is held in Bangkok on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old has starred for club and country in a breakout 2017, setting goalscoring records at both levels and winning a swag of individual honours along the way.

She will face stiff competition for Asia's top gong from Japan's Saki Kumagai - who helped Lyon to a second straight UEFA Champions League title in June - and DPR Korea teenager Sung Hyang Sim.

If she wins, Kerr will become Australia's third recipient of the award in four years following Westfield Matildas teammates Katrina Gorry (2014) and Caitlin Foord (2016).

Former national team star Kate Gill claimed the honour in 2010.

Kerr's achievements include scoring a record 17 goals in the United States' National Women's Soccer League and becoming only the second non-American to be named the competition's Most Valuable Player.

Kerr has also spearheaded the Westfield Matildas' surge to sixth in the FIFA world rankings, netting 11 goals in her last six appearances at international level.

Speaking after her brace in the second of last week's twin friendly wins over China PR, Australia coach Alen Stajcic praised the Perth Glory forward's handling of her newfound stardom.

"She's a true professional. I think she showed that with the amount of attention she's had over the last three or four months," Stajcic told media.

"It's really gone from zero to a hundred in terms of how much publicity and recognition she's had in the media.

"To still come out and be able to perform just shows how much she's matured as a person.

"She's really becoming one of the superstars of Australian sport."

The AFC Annual Awards 2017 are set to be held from approximately 10.30pm (AEDT) on Wednesday and will be broadcast live on YouTube.
