Kerr keeping her chin up

Striker Sam Kerr has allayed fears she suffered any serious injury from the stray elbow that floored her during the Westfield Matildas 2-0 win over Nigeria on Saturday.

The 21-year-old was allegedly hit in the jaw late in the second-half by defender Ugo Njoku requiring treatment from medical staff but looks set to recover in time for the Matildas’ pivotal clash against Sweden on Wednesday morning (AEST).

Kerr was unsure of the intent of the off-the-ball incident but was happy to focus on the result after the Matildas picked up a valuable three points in Winnipeg to move into second in Group D.

"I guess it was (deliberate) but I'm not sure what she took from it. We had a bit of a push before but nothing to do that,” Kerr said in the aftermath of the Matildas win.

“It's over now, we've got the three points and it's obviously disappointing for that to happen.

"I was also quite upset because it was quite vicious. It's quite disappointing."

The elbow looks set to see Njoku retrospectively sanctioned after officials missed the incident during the match.

Kerr, who teed up Kyah Simon for her second goal with a perfectly weighted cross, said the Matildas medical staff were stunned by the unprovoked attack.

"My doctor was just saying that it's not on. We've got a badge on our shoulder that says this fair play and it's not really fair play,” said Kerr.

“I think the doc said it's been cited and they're going to have a look at it.”
