Hat-trick hero Kerr named NWSL Player of the Week

Westfield Matildas star Sam Kerr has been voted the NWSL Player of the Week after her heroics for Chicago Red Stars at the weekend.

Kerr’s hat-trick in the 3-1 win over Sky Blue FC on Sunday (AEST) was her third in the competition, on a night where she scored her 50th goal in the competition – two records which now belong to the Westfield Matildas striker.

Incredibly, it's the sixth time the Australian has been named NWSL Player of the Week.

Her three goals against Sky Blue FC propel Kerr to the top of the goalscoring charts, with eight this season.

The pick of Kerr's strikes was her final goal, which came in the 63rd minute. Set off by a ball over the top, Kerr slid a fantastic finish past the Sky Blue goalkeeper to secure her hat-trick.

It wasn’t just her three record-breaking goals which earned Kerr the accolade, but also a stellar performance while she wasn’t putting them away for fun.

Ten shots (six on goal), 58 touches on the ball and three chances created cemented Kerr as the best player across the league in round 15 of the competition.

It was an important performance for Chicago, a win which moved them into fourth place on the ladder with just seven matches left to play.

The Red Stars will look to continue their march up the ladder when they play Seattle Reign on Sunday 15 July, 10am (AEST).
