Kerr: Westfield Matildas can win 2019 World Cup

The next FIFA Women’s World Cup might be over 18 months away but Westfield Matildas star Sam Kerr already has one eye on glory at France 2019.

Australia host China PR in a two-match series this week to close out an incredible 2017, which has produced ground-breaking wins over Brazil, Japan, European champions Netherlands and world champions USA.

While attempting to reclaim the AFC Women's Asian Cup in April is first on the checklist, Kerr pointed to the team's impressive list of scalps as evidence they can mix it on the biggest stage.

"I think we can go all the way [in France]. The only thing that's going to stop us is ourselves," Kerr told reporters.

"The exciting thing is we are young. This is probably our best shot we've had so far.

"At the moment we are all travelling at a really good rate.

"We're doing well, we're confident but there is so much more work to do.

"We've got so much potential in this team and we've just got to keep going at the rate we are and hopefully 2019 will be our year."

Perth Glory forward Kerr also paid tribute to head coach Alen Stajcic’s influence on the Westfield Matildas' rise since his appointment in 2014.

"I’ve learned so much off Staj. I left Perth Glory when I was 18 to go play under him [in a spell at Sydney FC]," she said.

"I think he's a great coach. He's tough but I've learned so much off him and I hope he stays around."
