Harry Kewell-s dream of a first competition trophy in professional football will have to wait, after Liverpool went down 3-2 after extra time to Chelsea in the Carling Cup final overnight.

The Australian international started the match and was replaced in the 56th minute, with Liverpool holding a 1-0 advantage at the time thanks to a goal from Jon Arne Riise after just 45 seconds.

Chelsea equalised with ten minutes remaining after an own goal by Steven Gerrard and in a thrilling second half of extra time, three goals were scored in five minutes to set up a tense ending.

Chelsea held on to win, despite its coach Jose Mourinho being sent to the stands, for its first trophy in five years and tenth overall.
