Uruguay has won the first leg of the FIFA World Cup qualifying play-off against Australia 1-0 in Montevideo. Both teams head to Sydney for the return leg next Wednesday night at Telstra Stadium.

Australia though have had their moments in the match and controlled large parts of the match.

Recoba's brilliance at set pieces is the difference in the first half. Australia cannot afford to give him any chances, although it must be said the free kick against Chipperfield was soft.

It's a minute to kick-off and a beauitiful evening in Montevideo. Can the Socceroos do it?

Guus Hiddink has gone for an attacking line-up naming Archie Thompson alongside Viduka up front, with Harry Kewell also named.

Popovic has won the central defence role ahead of Milicevic, while Schwarzer has won the keeper role ahead of Kalac. Uruguay has named Diego Forlan in the starting side, having overcome what was thought to be a serious thigh injury.
