Matildas keeper re-signs with W-League Premiers

Matildas goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold has re-joined Perth Glory Women for another year in the Westfield W-League.

The talented 21-year-old is regarded as one of the rising stars in Australian Women’s football, winning the Westfield W-League goalkeeper of the year twice in three years.

Arnold was also in the successful Matildas squad in the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, playing understudy to senior goalkeepers Lydia Williams and Melissa Barbieri.

‘Macca’ as she is affectionately known, is ready to return to the reigning premiers for a second straight year.

“I didn’t feel a need to change clubs,” Arnold said.

“I want to help the team go that one step further than last season to win the (Westfield W-League) Grand Final.”

“I’ve spoken to Bobby (Despotovski) over the phone a few times, and I’m looking forward to learning a new playing style and seeing what he has to offer to the team as a coach.”

Head coach Bobby Despotovski was also pleased to retain the Matilda, lauding her as a “crucial” part of the team.

“She’s an international goalkeeper, and she was here last year when the team had a successful season,” he said.

“She brings stability and organisation from the back. She knows the girls, the city and she enjoyed herself last year. She is crucial for us.”

Arnold was highly impressive in her first season for the Glory, proving to be an integral part of the team’s Premiership and grand final run. She won the Westfield W-League Goalkeeper of the Year and conceded only 13 goals in 15 games, including five clean sheets.

Arnold has previously represented Western Sydney Wanderers and Canberra United where she picked up her first Goalkeeper of the Year award at the age of 19.

‘Macca’ is tipped to have a big career in the game and seems destined for higher honours on the back of her ability to consistently deliver strong performances.

Arnold’s current aim is to make the Matildas squad for the upcoming 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Qualifiers.

Next week she will join the Matildas in Sydney for a two day camp before heading on a two week tour of the USA with the rest of the squad.

Arnold is expected to start training with Despotovski’s squad in September.
