The Westfield Matildas have moved up one place to 9 in the world in the latest FIFA rankings released today.
The Matildas’ rise comes on the back of their superb performances at the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.
Alen Stajcic’s impressive young side advanced out of the ‘Group of Death’ before becoming the first senior Australia team to win a knockout match at a World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Brazil.
The team’s only defeats at the tournament came against the USA and Japan, the two nations that contested the final.
World Champions USA are now the top ranked nation with Germany in second and France third.
The next focus for the Matildas will be qualifying for next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero.They must finish in the top two in the final round of qualifiers, which will be held in February next year
