Matildas squad selected for football Ferns match

Matildas Coach Tom Sermanni has named a 24-player squad for tomorrow's match against the New Zealand Women's Team, The Football Ferns, at North Sydney Oval.

Having just returned from playing two matches in China, Sermanni will again use this match to give his younger players much needed international experience as well as providing competitive opposition to the New Zealand Women's team who are preparing for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The match also will mark the retirement of Di Alagich who has been a member of the Matildas squad for the past 13 years during which she has made 85 appearances including three FIFA World Cups, two Olympic Games and two AFC Women's Asian Cups.

"Every international is an important match and this being Di's last match makes it even important for us to put in a good performance for her,"said Sermanni

"New Zealand is currently at the top of their game preparing for the Olympics and we'll have to be on our mettle to ensure that we can get a result," concluded Sermanni.

The Matildas will play their next international friendly match against the Japanese Women's National Team on Thursday 24 July at the Home Stadium in Kobe, Japan as part of a double-header with the Qantas Under 23s scheduled to face the Japanese Under 23 Men's National Team at the same venue later in the day.
