Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Tahiti and Fiji today joined Australia and New Zealand as the teams that will contest the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Nations Cup in Adelaide later this month. Stage One of the OFC Nations Cup/World Cup qualifiers ended today with Vanuatu clinching the final place with a 3-0 win over Fiji.
Socceroos coach Frank Farina said the results showed the tournament in Adelaide would be a tough challenge for his team.
"There were some very competitive matches and some very strong teams have qualified for the next stage," said Farina.
"They are all capable of pulling off an upset so we will need to focused right from the opening whistle of each match. We are fortunate to have the two matches against Turkey as that will hold us in good stead ahead of the tournament in Adelaide which starts next weekend." The top two nations from the Adelaide tournament will playoff later in the year for a spot in the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup and will also play each other again next year for the right to play the fifth best CONMEBOL (South America) nation for a berth at the World Cup finals.
