Lucas Neill scored the opening goal as his club side Al Jazira won their second successive President-s Cup in UAE overnight.

Al Jazira defeated Baniyas 3-1 in the final, played at Zayed Sports City, Abu Dhabi.

Neill-s goal, scored in the seventh minute, was the subject of some controversy with Baniyas coach Gabriel Calderon accusing the Qantas Socceroos captain of a “rugby foul” getting past an opposition defender.

"If you give the other side the first goal in a final, it's difficult, difficult," Calderon told TheNational.ae. "It was a rugby foul, not a little foul. It's terrible. Terrible."

But Neill responded later that his goal was legitimate.

“When I scored I thought maybe I was offside but I was not. It has been a great team effort."

Nawaf Mubarak equalised for Baniyas just after the restart, before goals from Ricardo Oliveira and Ahmed Ali Mubarak put the result beyond doubt.

Neill shared the news on social media this morning, tweeting, “Al Jazira are the Presidents Cup winners!! can't get my hands on the trophy, hopefully photos to follow. 3-1 winners!!!”
