Nigerian suspended for elbow on Matildas striker

The shocking elbow by Nigeria's Ugo Njoku on Matildas striker Sam Kerr in the sides' group stage game at the World Cup has seen the player banned for three games by FIFA.

FIFA announced the decision on Monday after the Disciplinary Committee looked at the incident in the game in Winnipeg last Saturday morning (AEST).

It means Njoku, who was a substitute against Australia, will miss her nation's vital clash with the USA this Wednesday morning (AEST).

The defender would only be available to play again if Nigeria made it to the World Cup Semi-Finals.

The Nigerian escaped any form of sanction from the referee during the game but video clearly shows the incident, which left Kerr in considerable distress.
