In the first of a series of one on one interviews, former Matilda Sarah Walsh caught up with Katrina ‘Mini’ Gorry to see how she is tracking in the lead up to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015.
Gorry has had a whirlwind 12 months. AFC Women’s Player of the Year (only the second Australian to claim the honour after Kate Gill), Football Federation Australia’s 2014 Women’s Player of the Year, and three goals in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Vietnam that ended with the Westfield Matildas being narrowly pipped in the Final by Japan.
Those feats are enough to have any player on cloud nine but the modest Brisbane born midfielder is not getting carried away. As the Westfield Matildas continue preparations for June’s World Cup, Gorry wants to harness the confidence she has gained from her accomplishments and take it into women’s football’s showpiece event.
“It was a huge honour to win an award like that,” Gorry told Walsh.
“It has grown my confidence but at the end of the day I can’t win those awards without the team and over the next few months we all need that confidence going into a World Cup, especially with the draw that we have.”
