Preview: Westfield Matildas v Brazil

The rampant Westfield Matildas are on the cusp of emerging victorious at the Tournament of Nations in the United States and collecting their first silverware since becoming Asian champions in 2010.

MOMENTUM WITH THE MATILDAS

After a history-making 1-0 defeat of their hosts, followed by a Sam Kerr-inspired 4-2 win against Japan, Alen Stajcic’s side is full of confidence heading into the game tomorrow (9.15am, AEDT) against Brazil.

Kerr is red-hot at the moment, with her hat-trick against Japan having many talking about her as the world’s foremost female footballer.

REVENGE FOR RIO

Australia last faced Brazil a year ago in the quarter-finals at the Rio Olympics.

In front of a partisan 50,000 strong crowd at Belo Horizonte, the tie was goal-less through 120 minutes before Brazil eventually won 7-6 on penalties to reach the semi-finals.

Katrina Gorry and Alana Kennedy missed their spot-kicks that day and will be desperate for revenge almost a year to the day later.

THE EQUATION

With wins over the USA and Japan in their first two matches, Australia needs just a draw from their final game against Brazil to be crowned champions.

A loss would open the door for the USA to claim the title if they could convincingly beat Japan in the tournament’s final game.

But the only thing on the mind of the Westfield Matildas will be a third straight victory.
