Matildas v Brazil: a history of huge clashes

RECENT MEETINGS

Australia completed a superb Tournament of Nations last month with a sublime performance, demolishing Brazil 6-1, despite conceding the game’s first goal.

Lisa De Vanna supplied the equaliser and eventually bagged a brace, as did Caitlin Foord with Katrina Gorry and Sam Kerr also finding the net in an utterly empathic display.

The previous meeting between the two was Australia’s heart-breaking penalty shoot-out defeat at the Rio Olympics last year.

The two nations also met in a friendly before the 2016 Games, with Brazil running out 3-1 winners.

SAM SOARS IN ‘17

Sam Kerr has catapulted herself into the Australian sporting consciousness with her recent feats, including a first-half hat-trick in the 4-2 defeat of Japan at the Tournament of Nations.

The lethal attacker also leads the goalscoring charts in the US women’s competition with 16 goals in 20 games (tying the existing record) and becoming the first player to ever score four goals in an NWSL game.

Many are calling her the best female footballer on the planet – and she’s one of ours!

MILESTONE MATCH

Melbourne Victory defender Laura Alleway is set to make her 50th appearance for Australia in this game.

Westfield Matildas star Laura Alleway admits she's a little nervous ahead of the clashes with Brazil.

The most capped player in the current Westfield Matildas squad is South Melbourne striker Lisa de Vanna, who could earn her 125th cap and add to her 42 international goals.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

The two teams meet again at McDonald Jones Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Tickets remain on sale for the match here.
