Record-breaking Young Matildas in goal spree

The Young Matildas have broken a record at the 2016 AFF Women’s Championships in Myanmar after they crushed Timor Leste 20-0 on Friday night.

In a ruthless performance from Craig Deans’ side, the Aussies showed no mercy as they set an AFF Championships goalscoring record with their incredible spree.

In all there were nine different scorers with Melindaj Barbieri, Emily Condon, Eliza Ammendolia, Melina Ayres and Ally Green all scoring hat-tricks.

Olivia Ellis (2), Sophie Nenadovic, Clare Wheeler and Ashleigh Lefevre were the other goalscorers.

The carnage started in just the second minute as Barbieri scored her first and she completed her treble inside the first 20 minutes.

The Young Matildas led 12-0 at the break and added another five within 15 minutes of the restart before the intensity drained out of their game in the stifling conditions.

But they still added another three late on to break the championship record and move to the top of their group.

“It was pleasing to get another win in the tournament and to be able to give the girls who didn’t play in the first match an opportunity to play,” coach Craig Deans said.

“We now look forward to next game against Myanmar, which will provide a good challenge both in a footballing context and playing the home nation in front of a big crowd."

The Young Matildas will play Myanmar on the weekend in a clash that will decide who tops the standings in the group.

The top two teams in each group will progress to the semi-finals with the winners to square off in the final on 4 August.

The AFF Women’s Championship is an open age tournament, however all 23 players in the Young Matildas squad are 19 years or younger.
