Schwarzer finishes season on a big high

While his club career remains uncertain beyond this upcoming off-season, if Mark Schwarzer has played his last match for Middlesbrough, he could not have wished for it to end on a higher note.

While his club career remains uncertain beyond this upcoming off-season, if Mark Schwarzer has played his last match for Middlesbrough, he could not have wished for it to end on a higher note.

Schwarzer is yet to make a decision on signing a new contract with Boro, where he played for over a decade and made in excess of 350 appearances, but the 8-1 win over Manchester City will be something to remember if he does move on.

He again played a full game for Boro, the win seeing them finish in 13th position on the ladder.

Apart from that win, the final round of the English Premier League didn-t finish that well for the Aussies.

Only three other players from a total of ten in the EPL saw game time, with Tim Cahill (Everton - 5th), Mark Viduka (Newcastle United - 12th) and Harry Kewell (Liverpool - 4th) not making the team sheets because of injury.

Brett Emerton played a full game Blackburn Rovers, but it finished on a sour note, losing 4-1 away at Birmingham City to finish 7th. Lucas Neill also played a full game as West Ham somehow managed a 2-2 draw with a late, late goal against Aston Villa. The Hammers finished 10th.

Josip Skoko saw all the action from the bench, as his Wigan Athletic side put up a gallant effort against Manchester United in a 2-0 loss, with United securing its 10th Premiership title with the win. Wigan ended the season in 14th place.

It was however a disappointing finish to the season for Adam Federici and Mile Sterjovski. Federici was on the bench for Reading, as they won 4-0 away at Derby County, but it wasn-t enough to prevent their relegation back to the Championship, after Fulham-s upset 1-0 win at Portsmouth guaranteed their survival. For Derby, Sterjovski was replaced at half time, with the team only down 1-0 and the second half was typical of their season - woeful. Derby finished with just one win all season and now lay claim to the worst ever team in the history of the Premiership.

Meanwhile Scott McDonald continued on his goalscoring ways, which is good news for Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek, with the World Cup qualifiers coming up in a few weeks time.

He scored his 31st goal of the season in Celtic-s 2-0 win over Hibernian, to keep the pressure on rivals Rangers, who still have three games in hand.

There was good news for Vince Grella, as his Torino side won 1-0 away at Livorno, guaranteeing their survival in the Serie A for next season. Mark Bresciano missed Palermo-s 2-0 home loss to Sampdoria, as he struggles with injury.

In Germany, none of our Aussies saw game time, with injured striker Josh Kennedy not in the Karlsruhe line-up that lost 3-1 at home against VfL Bochum, while Michael Beauchamp and Matt Spiranovic remained on the bench, as Nurnberg lost 1-0 away at Hertha Berlin. Nurnberg must now win its last game of the season to have any chance of avoiding relegation.
