Westfield Matildas attacker links with Brisbane Roar

Ahead of their double-header at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday, Brisbane Roar’s women’s side have added star striker Emily Gielnik to their Westfield W-League squad for the 2017/18 Season.

Gielnik, who is currently playing with Norwegian outfit Avaldsnes IL, will return to Brisbane later this month.

The 25-year-old is enjoying a sensational season in Europe, scoring six goals in 11 matches.

“Emily will further strengthen our attacking options,” coach Mel Andreatta said.

“She’s coming off a strong season and has recently gained more playing time with the national team and she will be an asset during this season.

“With her ability to create scoring chances from wide areas and her set-piece delivery, we are confident that her impact will be a positive one this campaign.

“Emily is a hard worker and loves the challenges that the Westfield W-League provides. I’m sure our supporters are looking forward to seeing her in orange again in the near future.”

Gielnik played her first Westfield W-League clash with Roar back in Season 2 of the competition, going on to make 74 appearances for the club.

She’s scored 28 goals in Roar colours, while she also has 12 Westfield Matildas caps to her name.

Gielnik re-joins an already star-studded Roar Women’s side that features seven past and present Westfield Matildas, a raft of promising young guns and quality international players.

After an opening round 3-1 win over Sydney FC, Roar’s women’s side host Sam Kerr and Perth Glory on Sunday.

The match is part of a double header with the Hyundai A-League side, which hosts Central Coast Mariners.
