The Socceroos have been named Asian Men's Football Team of the Year. The prestigious award was announced by the Asian Football Confederation at their annual gala awards last night in Abu Dhabi.

Australia held off strong opposition from fellow World Cup qualifiers Japan, Korea Republic, Iran and Saudi Arabia to win the coveted honour.

In a landmark year for the Socceroos, their first as part of Asia, they won through to the second round of the World Cup in only their second ever appearance in the finals and finished top of their qualifying group for the 2007 AFC Asian Cup.

Football Federation Australia Chairman Mr Frank Lowy was on hand to accept the award.

The FFA was also included in the top three for the prestigious AFC Association of the Year Award while the Qantas Matildas were one of the four finalists for the Women's Team of the Year.
