Stajcic, Kerr nominated for FIFA Best Awards

Westfield Matildas coach Alen Stajcic and star striker Sam Kerr have been shortlisted for FIFA Best awards 2018.

In a huge accolade for the duo, Stajcic has been nominated alongside nine others as the best women’s coach for the last 12 months, while Kerr is in the top 10 in line for the FIFA Women’s Player of the Year.

It’s Stajcic’s first nomination for the prestigious gong, having overseen the Westfield Matildas rising to their highest-ever ranking of number 4 in the world last year.

He guided the side to the Tournament of Nations title in 2017, as well as the AFC Women’s Asian Cup final in April, which has seen the team qualify for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup™ in France.

For Kerr, this is her second successive nomination as one of the best 10 players in women’s football.

But in 2017 Kerr missed out on a spot in the top three, with Lieke Martens the eventual winner.

It caps another incredible 12 months for Kerr who has won a stack of awards in that period.

The 24-year-old, who was the National Women’s Soccer League MVP and leading-scorer last year, is now also the all-time NWSL goal-scoring leader.

She became the fourth Australian to win the 2017 AFC Women’s Player of the Year award in November last year, while she was joint-winner of the Westfield W-League’s Julie Dolan medal alongside Clare Polkinghorne.

And just last week she won an ESPY Award in the US.

The awards are based on coaches and players respective achievements during the period from 7 August 2017 to 24 May 2018 inclusive and compiled by a panel of experts representing all of FIFA’s confederations.

All award winners will be revealed at The Best FIFA Football Awards show in London on 24 September with the final nominees to be announced between now and then.
