Caitlin Foord grabbed a quickfire double as the Matildas advanced to a 3-nil lead over Chile at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Westfield Matildas star Foord reveals the driving force behind her ‘best season yet’

Caitlin Foord believes nailing down a position in attack has been the spark of her best Westfield W-League season to date.

The 24-year-old has often been a victim of her own unique versatility for both club and country, having been deployed as a fullback, a winger and a forward throughout her career.

However, Foord has flourished this season after wreaking havoc as a right-sided forward for Ante Juric’s side, and her tally of nine goals is by far her best ever goal-scoring return.

“I guess I've just developed my position now and it’s just being able to focus on one position and think about what my job is when I'm playing,” she said.

“I started off at the back at Sydney and then slowly went back up.

I think this may be my best season yet personally, just the way I’ve been feeling and playing.

“I've been very happy with it, but it’s not finished yet.

“I’ve been building confidence throughout the season and I’ve been feeling good and happy with how I’ve been playing. So hopefully more goals, I don’t care if I don’t score them, I just hope someone does and we win."

Foord has been instrumental in a late-season surge for Sydney FC, in which she bagged consecutive doubles against Western Sydney Wanderers and Brisbane Roar earlier in the month.

That has the Sky Blues still marginally in Premiership contention ahead of a return to Wollongong to play at WIN Stadium in Thursday night’s pivotal clash Melbourne City.

It’s a game Sydney FC must not take likely at the risk of their own top-four ambitions and the Shellharbour-born attacker Foord is prepared for an almighty tussle.

“This is gonna be maybe one of the toughest games of the season,” she said.

“They [City] definitely have the players and the team, they just haven’t been getting results.

“With the players they have they could pull out a 4-0 win against any team so if we’re not on that could definitely happen to us.”
