Football Federation Australia (FFA) CEO, Ben Buckley, welcomed the addition of Tony Popovic to the Hyundai A-League coaching ranks today.

Popovic announced his retirement as a player after a 20 year professional career which has seen him play in England, Japan, Qatar and Australia.

“Tony, or ‘Poppa- as he is known, is a fan favourite and will be missed from the playing fields, but I-m delighted he is staying on in an off-field capacity,” said Buckley.

Popovic will become an assistant coach with Sydney FC with immediate effect.

The former Qantas Socceroo made 59 appearances for Australia, and was part of the 2006 FIFA World Cup squad in Germany.

He was also a part of the impressive 1992 Barcelona Olympics squad, and participated in two FIFA World Youth Championships at the Under 17 and Under 20 age groups.

“It-s good for football in Australia to be welcoming players of Tony-s calibre and experience into coaching.

“He, and his peers, are part of an important new generation of home grown coaches who have fantastic recent experience to draw on from different parts of the football world,” Buckley said.

“I know that anyone who has met Tony regards him highly for his professionalism, commitment and work ethic.

“It is also always good to see a professional sportsman leave the field of play on his own terms.”

Buckley said that Popovic is to be congratulated for a fantastic career.

“On behalf of everyone at FFA and the football community, I want to wish Tony all the best for the next stage of his professional career.

“I look forward to him continuing to make a welcome and substantial contribution to the growth and development of the game.”
