Westfield Matilda Chidiac experiences world-record crowd in Spain

Westfield Matilda Alex Chidiac has been part of history as her Atletico Madrid side met Barcelona in front of a world-record attendance at the Wanda Metropolitano in Spain.

An unused substitute for the match, the 20-year-old was in pole position to bear witness to the staggering 60,739 crowd, the largest-ever attendance for a women's club match, as Atletico fell to Barça 2-0 in La Liga Femenina.

Atletico remain on top of the ladder despite the loss, and will return to their usual home ground of Cerro del Espino in two weeks' time, a stadium that holds 3,500.

Twitter was awash with reactions as the two Spanish giants smashed the previous record of 48,121, recorded in a match that Atleti was also involved in when they took on Athletic Bilbao in January.

The overall world record was set back in 1999 when the United States met China in the Women's World Cup Final with the Americans triumphing 5-4 on penalties in front of 90,185 fans.
