Westfield Matildas abroad: NWSL wrap

Following their exploits at the recent 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, a host of Westfield Matildas have begun their commitments in America’s National Women’s Soccer League.

And a few of the Aussie girls went head-to-head for their respective clubs in a thrilling round of action over the weekend.

Defender Steph Catley made her debut for Seattle Reign, coming up against her former club Orlando Pride.

Catley played a full game for the Reign in a 1-1 draw, with Allie Long getting on the scoresheet in the first-half for Seattle, only for Brazilian superstar Marta to equalise just after the hour mark.

Westfield Matildas keeper Lydia Williams was an unused sub for Seattle, while Alanna Kennedy and Emily van Egmond both got through full games for Orlando.

Elsewhere, Katrina Gorry was on debut for the Utah Royals, playing the last 28 minutes of their 1-1 draw against Portland Thorns.

Ellie Carpenter, who was named the Westfield W-League’s NAB Young Footballer of the Year on Monday night, was an unused sub for the Thorns.

It was also a 1-1 draw for Sam Kerr in her first outing for new club Chicago Red Stars, who were forced to settle for a point against the Washington Spirit.

And Kyah Simon also made her first start for a new club, getting through 90 minutes as her Houston Dash side went down 2-0 against early-season pace-setters North Carolina Courage.
