Westfield Matildas duo nominated for NWSL awards

A pair of Westfield Matildas are in line for awards after starring in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) over the weekend.

Chicago Red Stars striker Sam Kerr has been nominated for the Goal of the Week, while in-form Seattle Reign keeper Lydia Williams is one of four candidates for the Save of the Week.

Kerr scored a brace for the Red Stars in their impressive 3-1 win over Orlando Pride, taking her to the top of the golden boot standings with 14 for the campaign.

The 24-year-old was nominated for her second goal, where she dispossessed compatriot Alanna Kennedy on the edge of the box before firing into the net.

Meanwhile, Williams was among four nominations for Save of the Week for one of her impressive stops in her side’s 1-1 draw against North Carolina Courage.

The Westfield Matildas shot-stopper showed tremendous reflexes to deny a header from Courage’s Jessica McDonald from point-blank range.

Williams leads the NWSL in clean sheets this season and would have had another against the Courage, only to concede in stoppage-time after a mad goalmouth scramble.

The other three saves in the running for this week’s award are Houston Dash’s Jane Campbell,  Didi Haracic from the Washington Spirit and Orlando Pride’s Ashlyn Harris.
