Westfield Matildas end 2017 in style with dashing display in Geelong

Eight goals, strong crowds, two emphatic wins and a Sam Kerr cavalcade. 

Not a bad way to end a stunning 2017 for the Westfield Matildas after their Victorian roadshow concluded on Sunday with another big win.

In matching the national team's record of seven straight wins, Australia prevailed 3-0 and 5-1 against China PR across Victoria this last week.

The first at AAMI Park, where Sam Kerr smashed one of the Matildas' great goals off her boot to help the Aussies overwhelm the Chinese. 

And on Sunday a rejuvenated Kyah Simon pulled the strings in a five-star win that saw Kerr break the great Sarah Walsh's record for consecutive goal-scoring games and future star Chloe Logarzo bagged her debut goal in the 5-1 victory. 

Not even a break in the first half for bad weather (lightning was afoot in Geelong) could stymie the Aussies' momentum. 

In both games, China sat back and hoped to contain the rampant attacking force in green and gold – they failed to do that, conceding eight times and scoring just once.

But for the Matildas it was a useful exercise.

Plenty of nations around the world in the coming years will likewise look to defend deep against such a rampant attacking force. 

It's not easy to play against this type of defending.

Head coach Alen Stajcic will have learnt even more about his side, too. 

Kyah Simon, for instance, looks a natural number 10. Her experience and sheer football brain could add another layer of class to this group and means she doesn't need to play as an out-and-out striker. 

And winger Hayley Raso? Wow. She's made a huge statement of intent with her impressive display in game one as a right wing-back. 

Yes, Steph Catley's injury was the only cloud but the hard-working defender may just relish a little time to recover from her extremely busy schedule with some time out. 

Outside of the football, the Matildas were about town spreading the gospel with politicians, sponsors and fans – their joy clear for all to see.

It's been another successful month for the national team. In fact for both national teams, with the Socceroos qualifying for another World Cup. 

Speaking of major tournaments, for the Matildas, it's onto the Asian Cup 2018 in Jordan.

They have finished a fabulous 2017 on a high. And the new year looms as even bigger for a team that's continuing to improve each time they play.
