Westfield Matildas: the last time we played China

The Westfield Matildas are the hottest team in women’s world football right now.

Which means any nation that comes up against Alen Stajcic’s incredible side knows they are in for one huge challenge.

After memorable wins over the likes of Brazil, USA and Japan already in 2017, China PR are the next nation to come up against the Aussies, in a two-match International Series in Victoria next month.

The first match will be played at AAMI Park on Wednesday, 22 November), with the second match at Simonds Stadium in Geelong on Sunday, 26 November.

Ahead of those huge home clashes, we look back at the most recent meeting between the two nations at the 2017 Algarve Cup back in March.

And it was a clash that was memorable for teenager Ellie Carpenter’s first goal for the Westfield Matildas.

The Westfield Matildas topped their group after beating China.

The Young defender popped up in the six-yard box with just six minutes left to head home a corner and hand Australia a 2-1 win.

China took a first-half lead against the run of play, when Wang Shanshan fired home the opener on 36 minutes.

Super-sub Emily Gielnik then smashed in a fabulous equaliser just after the hour mark before Carpenter’s late winner was followed by a jubilant celebration from the youngster.
