Westfield Matildas on the march in latest FIFA rankings

The Westfield Matildas have climbed two places to sixth on the latest FIFA rankings in a welcome boost ahead of October's twin friendlies.

Alen Stajcic's side registered more points than any other top 50 nation in the latest polling period thanks to an excellent showing at the Tournament of Nations.

Wins over Brazil and Japan along with a hard-earned draw against the top-ranked United States contributed to the surge.

The news comes as the team prepares for major tests against France and England in Europe.

Australia's two opponents traded places in the latest update, with the Lionesses leapfrogging Les Bleus into third.

The first of the friendlies, against France in Saint Etienne, will kick off at 5:00am on Saturday, October 6 (AEST).
