The Newcastle Jets have confirmed the signing of Westfield Matildas star Emily van Egmond for the next two Westfield W-League seasons.
W-League Head Coach, Craig Dean was ecstatic with the Jets’ latest signing.
“It certainly wasn’t one that we planned for, but to sign a player like Emily is massive for us,” said Deans.
“Things happened pretty quickly and to be able to have her on board for our first round clash with Western Sydney is a huge boost.
“Emily offers creativity, a sublime skill set and the experience that comes with playing international football.
“To have her combining with the likes of Katie Stengel and Cortnee Vine up front is an exciting prospect for us and our fans, because we’ll definitely see some entertaining football this season.”
The deal sees van Egmond return to her hometown and the club where she made her professional debut, and she couldn’t be happier about her return to Newcastle.
“It’s great to be back with my family and I’m excited for the season ahead, having spoken with Craig and Lawrie (McKinna) there’s a really positive vibe around the team and the club,” said van Egmond.
“I grew up in Newcastle and love the area, to get the chance to represent my hometown again is a massive thrill for me.
“Playing here for the Matildas in September was such an amazing experience, and it just showed me the strength of our footballing community and I’m happy to be a part of it once again.
Jets’ CEO, Lawrie McKinna said that when van Egmond became available, it was a simple decision to sign the international star.
“It’s not too often you get an opportunity that comes around like this one,” said McKinna.
“We knew from the outset we wanted to bring Emily on board, she’s a class player and a great person – she represents the direction we want to take this club.
“It’s exciting for Craig and for playing group to have a squad of this quality, and it epitomises the strides we’re taking with the W-League this season.”
It’s anticipated that van Egmond will begin training with her teammates immediately in preparation for their Round 1 clash at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday 29 October against Western Sydney Wanderers.
