Westfield Matildas star Sam Kerr to join NWSL club Chicago Red Stars

Westfield Matildas and Perth Glory superstar Sam Kerr will have a new home in the NWSL next season after being traded to Chicago Red Stars from Sky Blue FC.

Kerr, 24, links up with the Red Stars as part of a three-way trade between Chicago, Sky Blue FC and Houston Dash.

In the deal, two-time FIFA Player of the Year Carli Lloyd links with Sky Blue FC from Houston, USA international Christen Press joins Houston from Chicago and Kerr moves to the Red Stars.

Joining Kerr at Chicago is fellow Glory teammate Nikki Stanton, who, alongside Kerr, made 41 appearances in the last four seasons at Sky Blue.

Chicago head coach Rory Dames said he was thrilled to secure the duo for the 2018 NWSL campaign.

“Sam is a player that any team in the league would jump to get,” Dames told Chicago’s official website.

“She is a young and eager forward that has proven to be one of the best in the world. Then we get Nikki, who for us can be a solid 6 or 8 and really push our current mix of players.

“We couldn’t be happier to have both Sam and Nikki in Chicago.”

Kerr is coming off a remarkable 2017 with Sky Blue FC having netted a stunning 17 goals for the season, a new single-season record in the NWSL.

Her goal-scoring exploits saw her become the all-time NWSL leading goal-scorer and she was ultimately named the league’s MVP for the 2017 season.
