Westfield Matildas that lit up Round 2 of the Westfield W-League

Goals, assists and clean sheets: Round 2 of the Westfield W-League had it all from our Westfield Matildas.

It was promising to see the players find some form at the right time, as they had their final league hit-outs before heading into camp with Alen Stajcic ahead of back-to-back matches against Chile.

Sam Kerr helps ignite amazing comeback

Having missed out on Round 1 through suspension, Sam Kerr began the 2018/19 Season with fire in her belly, and hungry for goals.

Unfortunately for the 25-year-old, she was unable to get on the score sheet, but she played a hand in three of Perth Glory's goals as they drew 4-4 with Canberra United in a sensational match at McKellar Park.

It should be noted that these weren't just any three goals, either. They were the three goals which helped Glory salvage a point after being 4-1 down.

Kerr's first main contribution was an assist of the highest order on 82 minutes. Having received the ball out wide, the reigning Golden Boot winner cut in on her right and curled a delightful, delicate ball into the path of Alyssa Mautz. After a touch and feign, Mautz struck home to begin the comeback.

Minutes later, Kerr's shot was deflected into the path of Leticia McKenna, who scored on her debut with a cracker of a volley.

Kerr came close to her first goal of the 2018/19 Season when she latched onto a through ball on 90 minutes. With her second touch, she cut the ball back into the path of Rachel Corsie who steered in an own-goal.

Kerr displayed the type of form and dynamism Westfield W-League fans have come to expect. Should she replicate it for the Westfield Matildas, as she has on so many occasions, Chile will have their hands full.

Amy Sayer starts with a bang

2018 has been a sensational year for Amy Sayer. She signed for a new club, made her debut for the Westfield Matildas, stood out in the AFF Women's Championship and now has her first goal of the 2018/19 Season.

Sayer showed anticipation and desire to arrive late in the box and pounce on Lydia Williams' parry.

While Sayer and her Westfield Matildas teammates were unable to get the win, the likes of Lisa De Vanna, Caitlin Foord and Chloe Logarzo all showed promising signs to take into the Chile double-header.

Elsewhere in the Westfield W-League

Katrina Gorry and Clare Polkinghorne starred in Brisbane Roar's 1-0 victory away to Western Sydney Wanderers.

Mel Andreatta's women were perhaps a little unlucky to draw 1-1 with Perth in Round 1, after struggling to convert their dominance into more than one goal.

Round 2 was a different proposition though, as the spine of Gorry and Polkinghorne overpowered Western Sydney.

Lydia Williams looked back to her best for Melbourne City, despite conceding a goal to Westfield Matilda teammate Sayer. The 30-year-old commanded her box and marshalled the defence, showing some good form heading into the friendlies against Chile.

Larissa Crummer was also impressive despite her side's 2-1 loss to Melbourne Victory. The 22-year-old was helpless to prevent Melina Ayres striking from distance, while Natasha Dowie's slaloming run was simply unstoppable.
