The Westfield Matildas continued their impressive run of form with a thrilling 2-1 win over Brazil in Penrith.

Westfield Matildas in Westfield W-League: Round 1 wrap

Many of the Westfield Matildas made their mark in the Westfield W-League this weekend as Season 10 kicked off with a bang.

Ahead of the China friendlies in Victoria later this month, here’s a wrap of some of our key players and how they went in Round 1.

EMILY VAN EGMOND

Bossed it! The Jets captain looked imperious in central midfield as the Jets women took the lead, conceded then scored a winner late through a Kingsley header.

Newcastle’s skipper was at her very best for the hosts.

SAM KERR

Sammy did what Sammy does. Score goals. She was one of the four scorers as Glory thumped Melbourne City in the grand final rematch. And it only took her four minutes to find her range.

KYAH SIMON

Got the City women back in the contest just after half time in her debut goal for City. And it was a beauty that could win goal of the season.

That was the good news. The bad news? City got beaten 4-1.

In the City side were fellow Matildas Alanna Kennedy, Steph Catley and  Larissa Crummer but star keeper Lydia Williams was absent.

KATRINA GORRY

Talk about making a statement. “Mini” smashed an opener in 21 seconds before copping a hit to her ankle. She battled on (and had been ill prior to the game) as Roar won 3-1 over Sydney FC in the season opener at Allianz.

Brisbane had Matildas keeper Mackenzie Arnold and Claire Polkinghorne also in their starting XI along with the flying Hayley Raso in attack.

MICHELLE HEYMAN

The striker was on target for Canberra United with a nice equaliser in Melbourne. But against Victory, who had Laura Alleway in their side marking Heyman, the Big V won it 2-1.

CHLOE LOGARZO

The tenacious midfielder made her Sydney FC debut in the 3-1 loss to Roar on Friday night.  There was no Lisa De Vanna for the Sky Blues.
