What would you do if you were Holger...?

With 28 days until the Qantas Socceroos face Saudi Arabia at Melbourne’s AAMI Park, it’s a good time to consider the questions that might be going through the mind of head coach Holger Osieck.

With 28 days until the Qantas Socceroos face Saudi Arabia at Melbourne-s AAMI Park, it-s a good time to consider the questions that might be going through the mind of head coach Holger Osieck.

The Socceroos have already sealed qualification for the next stage of qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, but that doesn-t mean there aren-t questions hanging over this fixture.

Firstly who should be in the squad? Sure, it-s a dead rubber but there-s no way the Qantas Socceroos want to lose on home soil. Does this mean Holger should consider bringing back some of our European-based stars to field a full-strength side?

The coach has often stated that this is his aim whenever the Socceroos play, but given we-re in the middle of the season, there are mitigating factors that could restrict selection of players in England, Germany and so on. We can-t count anyone out at this stage but do you think Holger will bring any players home from the northern hemisphere?

Then there-s the Asian-based players, who are much closer to home and in some respects are waiting for their club competitions to start up. Would they be match-fit and who-s playing regularly enough?

Beyond that there is, of course, the Hyundai A-League players looking to impress and get a chance to step up to the national team. Has anyone done enough this season to warrant a call up to the senior side? Should a qualifier like this, even one that-s a dead rubber, be used to blood new players or should that be kept to friendlies?

And finally we come back to the Australian desire to win - Saudi Arabia must win this game to progress to the next round of qualifying. They-re not here to make up the numbers and although the Socceroos are safe, they-re still going to have a game on their hands.

Who you do think has the ability or sheer drive to make this game their own and make sure Australia finishes Group D in style?
