Young Matildas edged by Myanmar

The Young Matildas conceded an early goal to lose 1-0 against Myanmar in the third place playoff at the AFF Women's Championship on Thursday night.

In a game of few highlights the decisive goal came on 21 minutes after a defensive lapse in concentration from a corner by the Aussie defence.

Australia had a much stronger start to the second half as Myanmar began to fatigue.

The Young Matildas controlled possession and territory throughout the second half but were only able to create some half chances.

Australia looked the most dangerous team in the second 45 minutes, but Myanmar continued to threaten on the counter attack and eventually held on for the win.

Coach Craig Deans was disappointed his team did not finish third but felt the chance to play these types of games can only help our next generation of Matildas stars.

“It's definitely been a positive experience being here for the players.

"The chance to play in four quality games in tough conditions and in front front of big crowds is something all the players should learn from.

"The tournament has also given coaching staff a good opportunity to assess the players and see where they are at for the upcoming AFC qualifiers," he said.
